Which ArcGIS 10.1 Prerelease software will I receive?

Customers participating in the ArcGIS 10.1 Prerelease will receive licenses only for their licensed Esri software that is current on maintenance.

Please take advantage of this prerelease to test your workflows with your current ArcGIS software entitlements ensuring you have the license entitlements and features for the tasks at hand.

What do I need to do to participate in the Prerelease Program?

Only the Primary Maintenance Contact, Site Administrator, or Esri Distributor can gain and provide access to Prerelease software in your organization. The Primary Maintenance Contact or Site Administrator must join* to participate in the program for your organization.

If you participated in the ArcGIS 10.1 Beta Program and would like to join the Prerelease program, please contact your Primary Maintenance Contact or Esri Distributor.

*Note for customers outside the United States: If your local Esri Distributor has identified you as qualifying for ArcGIS 10.1 Prerelease, you will be entered in the Prerelease Program and don't need to take any additional action to join.

What is the impact on my ArcGIS 10.0 licenses if I join the Prerelease Program?

For all customers participating in the Prerelease program, eligible ArcGIS 10.0 license entitlements will be upgraded to 10.1 licenses. This does not mean, however, that you must use the 10.1 Prerelease software, but rather means you will be enabled to use the 10.1 software as per your current license entitlements. The site administrator is responsible for managing the customer's entitlements and use of the prerelease software.

Should I use Prerelease in my work (production) environment?

No. ArcGIS 10.1 Prerelease is not the final 10.1 release, and, similar to beta software, any use of Prerelease should be for testing current workflows, software enhancements, implementation, and other work in a non-production environment.

How do I upgrade my ArcGIS for Server licenses?

New authorization codes will be emailed to the Primary Maintenance Contact as it was with the release of ArcGIS 10.0. These codes are to be used for the ArcGIS 10.1 Prerelease. Beta codes issued for the ArcGIS 10.1 Beta for Server should not be used as the Beta authorization codes are temporary and will timeout before Final software is released.

How do I upgrade my ArcGIS for Desktop licenses?

ArcGIS 10.1 for Desktop has a new feature that enables the upgrade of the license to the new software version from 10.0 to 10.1. This means that the Administrator will not necessarily need to re-distribute ArcGIS for Desktop authorization numbers at 10.1 as the software will automatically upgrade the licenses currently authorized on each licensed computer.

ArcGIS for Desktop - Concurrent Use licenses: To participate in the 10.1 Prerelease, you will need to upgrade to the ArcGIS 10.1 license manager and upgrade your 10.0 licenses to 10.1. The 10.1 licenses will permit the use of ArcGIS for Desktop 10.1, 10.0, and 9.x client software.

After installing the ArcGIS 10.1 for Desktop License Manager, you will click the "Upgrade Now" button that will upgrade the 10.0 licenses that are currently authorized on that License Manager. You will have the option to select a subset of licenses (the same dialog that permits selective deauthorization of licenses), however, it is recommended that you upgrade all that are presented (default) since the 10.1 licenses will serve the ArcGIS for Desktop clients versions 10.1, 10.0, and 9.x.

Note that you will only be able to upgrade the licenses that are authorized to the particular License Manager you are using. If any licenses are borrowed, they will need to be returned before they can be upgraded to 10.1, but that can be done separately at a later time.

If you desire to control who is using the Prerelease software, you may restrict access to the Prerelease software, or, to test the 10.1 Prerelease License Manager itself, another option is to setup a separate license manager on another machine (by deauthorizing/authorizing or transferring licenses) and allow only those users designated for testing.

In summary:

  • The 10.1 licenses served from the 10.1 License Manager will work for either the 10.1, 10.0 or 9.x client ArcGIS for Desktop software.
  • The licenses used to test Prerelease are from the current entitlement pool, you will not receive licenses in addition to what is current on maintenance.
  • The 10.1 licenses you receive will upgrade/replace the 10.0 licenses you already own.

To run ArcGIS 10.1 for Desktop Prerelease using a Concurrent Use license, follow these steps after obtaining the Prerelease software:

Authorized ArcGIS 10.0 for Desktop License Manager
  1. Uninstall ArcGIS 10.0 for Desktop License Manager (no need to deauthorize licenses)
  2. Install ArcGIS 10.1 Prerelease License Manager
  3. Select the Upgrade Now option to upgrade of the licenses1

1An Internet connection is required to use the license upgrade feature.

ArcGIS for Desktop - Single Use licenses: We encourage users who have participated in the beta program to continue to test Prerelease software in a non-production environment. A limited number of temporary Prerelease Single Use licenses may be obtained for testing Prerelease.
If ArcGIS 10.1 Prerelease is installed on a machine currently authorized with an ArcGIS 10.0 license, the current 10.0 license will be upgraded to the final 10.1 license. Customers need to determine whether they want to install ArcGIS 10.1 on a currently licensed 10.0 machine or get a temporary Prerelease authorization code to test the software so as not to interfere with the production workflows.

To run ArcGIS 10.1 for Desktop Prerelease using a Single Use license, follow these steps after obtaining the Prerelease software:

ArcGIS 10.0 authorized machine
  1. Uninstall ArcGIS 10.0 for Desktop
  2. Install ArcGIS 10.1 for Desktop Prerelease
  3. Confirm the upgrade of the license when prompted1
Beta test machine
  1. Request a temporary Prerelease authorization code2
  2. Deauthorize the beta license3
  3. Uninstall ArcGIS 10.1 for Desktop Beta
  4. Install ArcGIS 10.1 for Desktop Prerelease
  5. Authorize the software

1An Internet connection is required to use the automatic upgrade feature.

2A temporary Prerelease authorization code can be requested by users with access to the Customer Care site or through your Esri Distributor. A maximum of 25 temporary licenses, or up to the number of licenses in the customer entitlement (whichever is lower) may be requested.

3The beta license will expire in early April 2012. To continue to use the Prerelease until the Final release, deauthorize the beta license and use a temporary Prerelease authorization code.

What if my ArcGIS 10.0 license doesn't upgrade?

Selected products that are being incorporated or retired will not be upgraded to 10.1.

  • Maplex and ArcScan are included with ArcGIS 10.1 for Desktop
  • ArcGIS Schematics is included with ArcGIS 10.1 for Server Standard and Advanced.
  • The licenses for retired products (Image Server, ArcIMS, COGO, and ArcInfo Workstation) will continue to work under the 10.0 license at 10.1.
  • Please note that Visual Studio 2008, SQL Server 2005, and VBA ArcObjects SDK are no longer supported at 10.1.

If during the upgrade authorization of your Single Use ArcGIS 10.0 for Desktop licenses to version 10.1, the software experiences a technical reason for failure, you will be provided a 15-day license permitting you time to seek assistance and not interfere with your use of the ArcGIS software.

How do I get the ArcGIS 10.1 Prerelease software?

If you qualify to join the ArcGIS 10.1 Prerelease Program, you will be able to download the Prerelease software from the Customer Care site just as you do with ArcGIS 10.0 software.

I was a beta tester for ArcGIS 10.1, what steps do I take to participate in Prerelease?

  1. Only the Primary Maintenance Contact can obtain and grant access to Prerelease. If your organization qualifies to participate in the prerelease program, please get in touch with your Primary Maintenance Contact
  2. If you had the ArcGIS 10.1 for Desktop Beta on a non-production machine using the temporary beta license, it is suggested that you do the following:
    1. Deauthorize your Single Use beta license (Concurrent Use beta licenses may be deauthorized after upgrading to 10.1, if desired)
    2. Uninstall the ArcGIS 10.1 for Desktop Beta software
    3. Install ArcGIS 10.1 for Desktop Prerelease software
    4. Authorize the software:
      • Your 10.0 authorization codes may be used to upgrade to 10.1. This is required for Concurrent Use licenses.
      • If you have Single Use licenses, you may request temporary 10.1 authorization codes to use for testing rather than using your production licenses.
      • If you have authorized a license of ArcGIS 10.0 for Desktop on a non-production or non-critical machine and wish to upgrade it to 10.1, you may simply uninstall 10.0, install the 10.1 Prerelease, and upgrade the license when prompted.
  3. If you had ArcGIS 10.1 for Server Beta on a non-production machine using the temporary beta license, it is suggested that you do the following:
    1. Uninstall the ArcGIS 10.1 for Server Beta software
    2. Install ArcGIS 10.1 for Server Prerelease software
    3. Authorize using the new 10.1 authorization code for ArcGIS 10.1 for Server
  4. If I install the Prerelease on the same machine as the Beta without deauthorizing the license, will it work?
If a machine is licensed for ArcGIS 10.1 Beta 2 (Server or Desktop) and the Prerelease is installed on that machine without deauthorization of the Beta 2 license, the Prerelease will run, but will timeout in early April 2012. Beta authorization codes will not authorize Prerelease through the Software Authorization Wizard. Temporary Authorization codes issued specifically for Prerelease will enable ArcGIS past the release of ArcGIS 10.1 final. An ArcGIS 10.0 license that is upgraded to 10.1 will also continue to work past the final release.

After upgrading my license to 10.1, will I be able to use an earlier version of ArcGIS for Desktop?

Yes. If you have Concurrent Use licenses, the 10.1 licenses will support 10.0 and 9.x as well as 10.1. If you have a Single Use license, you can uninstall 10.1, re-install 10.0 and use the 10.0 client software on the 10.1 license. However, version 9.x of ArcGIS for Desktop will not run on a Single Use 10.1 license.

Do I need an Internet connection to upgrade to ArcGIS 10.1 for Desktop Prerelease?

Yes. Just as when authorizing licenses at 10.0, the Prerelease software will communicate via the Internet to automatically upgrade your license from 10.0 to 10.1. Users who need to authorize offline will need to run the offline process via the Software Authorization Wizard. If you are installing ArcGIS 10.1 Prerelease on an ArcGIS 10.0 machine, deauthorize the license(s), install the Prerelease, and then authorize using the 10.1 authorization codes from the Customer Care website. For Single Use licenses, consider obtaining a temporary Prerelease authorization code from the Customer Care site or Esri Distributor.

How do I provide feedback to Esri regarding ArcGIS 10.1 Prerelease?

If you participated in the ArcGIS 10.1 Beta program, you may continue to provide feedback through the Beta Community forums. All Prerelease participants in the United States may also contact Esri Technical Support to provide feedback regarding ArcGIS 10.1. Outside the United States, please contact your local Esri distributor.
